Neil tries to make small talk on the way to school, and I resolutely block him out. My hands ache on the steering wheel, and my pulse won’t calm down, no matter how many deep breaths I take to steady my nerves.

It’s too hard to focus with him sitting in my passenger seat, filling the car with the soft scent of woods. He offered to drive, but I flat out refused. No one drives my car but me. No matter how safe and steady they feel.

I chalked up my attraction toward Neil to a summer time flirtation, but that’s a big old lie. I still find him way too attractive, which only goes to prove I have a serious monster issue.

I take another deep breath, filling my lungs with that delicious smell, and a shiver skates down my spine. Frustrated with myself, I roll down my window to let in the cold air to help clear my mind and my hormones.

When I pull into school, we’re one of the first to arrive, and I park in my usual spot, shut off the ignition, and turn to face him.

Neil gives me a soft smile that turns my insides to goo as his eyes sweep over my face. “It’s really is good to see you again.”

It’s good to see him, too, which is wrong on so many levels. I stiffen my spine. “I get out of school at three o’clock, then I’m going to go work on the Homecoming float. I’ll be there until seven.”

He nods in understanding. “Okay, I’ll meet you here at three.” He reaches for his door handle and pops out of the car to stride around the front.

I crank my window back up, then climb out before he can reach my side and open my door. Because, as I learned at the house, he’s that level of gentleman. And that is not attractive at all. Nope. Not even a little bit.

He catches the top of my door and holds it steady for me while I grab my bag.

When I turn to him, he has his hand out.

Eyes narrowing, I extend my keys to him. “No cruising around town. You’re only allowed to drive straight to your meeting place.”

“Yes, ma’am.” His fingers brush against my palm as he takes the keys, and my pulse leaps to his touch. “I’ll take care of your baby.”

“You’d better,” I say, my voice coming out way too weak.

Smiling, he steps around the door and straight into my personal space. “Halie.”

Heart thumping, I look up at him and squeak, “Neil?”

He leans down, his face close to mine. “I missed you.”

“I...” I swallow. It’s so hard to think when he’s this close.

He touches my cheek, his fingertips burning against my skin. “You missed me, too, right? I wasn’t alone in how I felt during that kiss.”

I lick my lips, my eyes dropping to Neil’s mouth. I’ve lived through so many bad kisses lately. What I felt when Neil kissed me had to be a fluke,
